This RYA Competent Crew course is ideal for those who are new to yachts and sailing vessels and would like to gain confidence on the basic aspects of crew handling to ensure you are an asset on board.   It is useful for crews to participate with skippers, in a group or with their skipper so that your vessel runs like a well oiled machine. Apart from the obvious safety benefits of extra boat handlers on board, it adds interest and increases teamwork ability so everyone can contribute to the trip.

 

On this course you will learn:

 

• Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat,

• Her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework including setting, reefing and handling of sails

• The best use and practice of sheets & halyards & their associated winches

• Fire precautions and fighting, including hazard perception and situation management

• Personal safety equipment, man overboard and emergency equipment including harnesses, buoyancy aids, life rafts and flare use.

• Meteorology including basic forecasting and practical on-water signs.

• Helmsmanship so that you may relieve those who have taken time at the wheel.

• general duties for the maintenance of the vessel

• Rules of the road in order to keep the vessel safe on watch

• How to load a dinghy and control the vessel under oar.
