A great course to gain confidence at the helm, in navigation and safety in our fantastic Bavaria 38'.  This course can also help you get the best from your modern electronic aids such as GPS and radar to aid your own passages once qualified.

 

The course is accredited for users in daylight conditions. 

 

Before attending the course you should be able to navigate and are well advised to attend the RYA Day Skipper Shore-based course to brush up on your skills.

 

We are talking about things like safety, collision regulations, navigation (on paper and electronically) and weather. Generally, this is delivered in the classroom, but it can be delivered via an online learning course with support from an instructor.

 

Ideally, to take the course you should have:

 

Pre-course experience:  5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht Navigation to Day Skipper Shorebased and basic sailing ability.

 

The best part about learning in a controlled environment is that there is an experienced RYA instructor on board ensuring your safety, while guiding and encouraging you to practice your manoeuvres. By the end you will be a confident and capable skipper, able to assess situations and make qualified decisions for the benefit of the sailing cruiser and its crew.

 

 Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising

By the end of the course you should be confident to:

  • Prepare the yacht for seagoing

  • Be competent in deck work and understanding the various equipment functions.

  • Be able to make simple repairs and maintain mechanical elements such as engines.

  • Handling under sail and under power including close quarters.

  • Passage planning and practical application.

  • Understand the effects of weather conditions and tides

  • Make informed decisions about whether to go out in certain forecasts Decide where to berth and what time of time of day to arrive

  • Delegate tasks and direct your crew

  • Adapt your plans when challenges arise

  • Look after all aspects of safety on board

  • Understand the rules of the road

  • Undertake some night cruising
